Description

Already familiar with identifying common bumblebee species, and want to deepen your identification skills? This intermediate bumblebee workshop is for you.

Delve deeper into identifying bumblebees, gaining confidence with common bumblebees, cuckoo bumblebees, and learning how to differentiate the common species from the very similar but rarer species, and more with this hands-on workshop. We'll also learn how to tell the sex and caste of bumblebees, solitary bees from the social bees, bumblebee mimics from true bumblebees and bees from wasps.

The workshop will be mainly practical, using museum specimens, microscopes and magnifying glasses.

If the weather is good, we may visit Brandon Hill to observe bumblebees in the wildflower meadow. In poor weather, we’ll explore the museum’s behind-the-scenes insect collection. Please let us know about any accessibility needs in advance so we can ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience for everyone.
