Desert Ecology: Moonlight Hike

Join us for an educational 2.5-mile ecology hike with field expert Mike Medina. 

Mike Medina has 40 years of experience as a field biologist, natural resource specialist, and instructor/lecturer. In 2022, Mike retired from the Navy and began volunteering and teaching with the Desert Institute. 

This is a Desert Ecology & Conservation Certificate class worth 1.5 units.

Participants will meet at the Split Rock parking lot. After a 10-minute introduction and safety brief, the group will begin hiking the 2.5-mile Split Rock Loop Trail.  The first half of the hike should be during sunset and golden hour, and the second half should be under moonlight.  The group will make stops at locations predetermined by the leader, and various desert ecology topics will be discussed.  Topics will include geology and topography, plants, animals, soils, microorganisms, climate and weather, hydrology, indigenous peoples and other human activities, and environmental conservation and protection.  

Participants must bring All required items for your course: Water, sturdy walking or hiking shoes, a flashlight (preferably a headlamp), and appropriate clothing for a significant and rapid change in temperature.

Important information: Participants should be comfortable walking on uneven terrain in low visibility. Participants will bring a red headlamp, water, and appropriate hiking footwear. Participants will hike 2 miles in a loop back to the parking lot. In mid-October, the temperature should be moderate. However, students should be prepared in case it is cold. If the weather is still very hot, participants will take a leisurely stroll close to the parking lot, and the activity will only last for 1.5 hours. All participants must wear pants, bring a jacket, and have personal food and water. Desert Institute will provide a first aid kit, two volunteers, and a park radio.

Desert Institute offers some classes for credit through UC Riverside Extension. If you complete 12 units of our 400-level classes, you will earn a Desert Ecology & Conservation Certificate! If you take this class, you will earn 1.5 units towards a Desert Ecology & Conservation Certificate.
