Event description

Arrival is a quartet of outdoor light, projection, and sound installations by 2nd Year VCA Production students located around the buildings that border Linear Park on University of Melbourne’s Southbank Campus. Each group will compose a dynamic activation of a liminal outdoor space with light, sound and image using the graphic novel The Arrival by Shaun Tan as inspiration. The installations across the four locations are intended to involve some journey for the audience as they pass from each location to the final destination backstage in Space 28.

Please note that strobe lighting, theatrical smoke and dynamic sound may be employed.

Location

This installation commences outside in Linear Park. Works are presented on the exterior of buildings 875, 876 and 879 before moving to the backstage area in building 879.

Entry

The installation space is accessible via Sturt Street or pathways in the new Dodds Street Linear Park and can be viewed from a myriad of angles. This is a non-ticketed open outdoor event so please respect the installations and the personal space of others when viewing the works.

Weather

The installation is an all-weather event and will go ahead in rain or wind. Please come prepared for the elements by wearing appropriate footwear, dressing warmly and in wet weather clothing if required. Umbrellas are allowed, but please be courteous of other patrons when using them.

PARKING

The City of Melbourne has recently changed the parking restrictions around the Southbank Campus. Parking control hours are now expanded to 7am–10pm, seven days per week, and are capped at three hours. A $2-per-hour fee after 7pm is also now in place. There is no change to the $4-per-hour peak rate between 7am–7pm. Parking inspectors are regularly in the area fining drivers who overstay their meter, so we encourage everyone to be aware and avoid an expensive fine. More information.
