Event description

Title: Design your own rehab

This presentation will cover the main features of exercise prescription for different purposes - what is important for improving balance, strength or improving your ability to do a specific task such as walking. Thomas, Emma, Stephanie and Brian will share their rehab experiences and their advice about designing your own rehab.

Presenters:

Dr. Simone Dorsch

Simone is a physiotherapy clinician, researcher and educator. She has 30+ years experience in stroke, brain injury and aged care rehabilitation. Simone is a Director of the StrokeEd collaboration and an Associate Professor at the Australian Catholic University in North Sydney.

Brian Beh

Brian sustained a stroke at 68 years old in 2016. Initially after his stroke, he had 0/5 strength in right side, weakness on the right side of his face and a feeding tube in his right nostril. Seven years on he has integrated rehab into his daily life, walks between 12-15 kms a day, 7 days a week and has regained partial use of his right arm and hand. Brian is heavily engaged in stroke advocacy and participates in numerous research projects, webinars and other stroke related activities.

Stephanie Ho

After surviving a severe stroke at 22 years of age, Stephanie has committed her life to improving the healthcare system and easing the burden for other survivors. She currently serves as an Executive Board Member for NSW Agency for Clinical Innovation and is a regular keynote speaker on the topic of stroke and the impact of rehabilitation from a consumer perspective. Stephanie was awarded for her work in 2019 by the National Stroke Foundation.

Emma Gee

At the age of 24 Emma was an occupational therapist and an avid runner who had recently climbed Borneo’s Mt Kinabalu. When she suffered a stroke, her life was changed forever. As a health professional, Emma offers a rare insight into life as a patient and an advocate, and emerges with a uniquely sensitive perspective.

Thomas Graham

Thomas survived an ischemic stroke at age 66, in 2023, causing loss of mobility to his right sided limbs. He follows a diverse exercise program, focused on the physical tasks of daily life, for restoring and maintaining his functional mobility to achieve independent living. His message, to help other survivors, is about Practice, Pace, Patience, Persistence and Playfulness. His early post stroke experience is captured in his book, Let’s go for a walk — rebuilding body, mind and spirit after a stroke.
