DesignFreo Salon: Paul Roberts / Garden Cities

We are delighted to launch our DesignFreo Salon series with an international guest speaker!

Paul Roberts is a planner (a favourite design-adjacent profession of ours!) and an expert in Garden Cities, an international movement to design communities that combine the economic and social vitality of the city with the green space, fresh air and human scale of country life.

Splitting his time between the UK and Australia, Paul argues that sustainable urban growth cannot be achieved through infill alone. The Garden City is a necessary complement to density and a genuine alternative to the sprawling suburbs that define the edges of our city.

With two-thirds of Perth’s new housing being delivered on the suburban fringe, this is a conversation we need to be having. How do we design communities that are liveable, connected and green? How do we strike the balance between density and open space? And how do we bring residents, planners and politicians along for the ride?
