DesignFreo On Location 07: Michelle Blakeley / My Home
Event description
How is one architect's vision tackling homelessness in Fremantle and beyond?
We're excited to invite you on site at the My Home project in North Fremantle with architect and My Home founder Michelle Blakeley.
My Home is a philanthropic development company that builds small, sustainable houses on unused government land to alleviate homelessness. The first development is now complete - 18 dwellings in North Freo that will soon be ‘my home’ to a group of women over 55 who might otherwise have nowhere to live.
Prefabricated offsite, the compact 31 sqm homes are designed and built using Passivhaus principles to be energy efficient and comfortable year-round.
"My key design driver was to create a house that the resident would enjoy coming home to, not just because it is safe and secure and protects from the weather, but also because it is welcoming, joyful and embracing," says Michelle.
Join us on location to hear Michelle talk about the evolution of the My Home model and see inside these small but perfectly formed houses, which can provide sustainable design lessons for us all. Michelle will be joined by construction director Jim De Baughn from Highbury Homes.
Please bring a tinned or dry food item to donate to a My Home resident's pantry.
Transport: The venue is 100m south of North Fremantle Train Station. There is some parking on Congdon Street and more at North Fremantle Train Station.
Thanks as always to our fabulous founding and principal sponsor ICS Australia.
