Designing with Country: From Principles to Practice
Description
Join Dr Kirrakee Watson and Dr Julie Nichols for an informal breakfast conversation exploring what Designing with Country can mean in contemporary architectural and design practice.
______________
Drawing on current projects, research and teaching, Kirrakee will discuss the IBEA (Indigenising of the Built Environment Australia) project as a case study, exploring relationships with Country, Aboriginal Knowledges, cultural authority and the responsibilities that come with working on Country.
Julie will share insights from Designing with Country projects and pedagogical initiatives, considering how these approaches are being developed across different contexts and scales.
Rather than presenting Designing with Country as a fixed methodology or set of principles, the conversation will explore:
what meaningful, relational and culturally appropriate practice can look like
where the profession is currently at, and
some of the challenges and opportunities that remain.
Importantly, this is intended to be a conversation, rather than a lecture. We will open the discussion to practitioners to share their own experiences, questions, challenges and approaches to working with Country.
Format:
Come along for coffee, bagels and an open conversation about how we can strengthen relationships with Country through design practice and help build a community committed to doing this work, meaningfully and well.
Outcomes:
The event will also explore opportunities to establish an ongoing network and community of practice for architects, designers and other built environment practitioners interested in Designing with Country.
The aim is to create a space where practitioners can continue to connect, share knowledge and experiences, learn from one another, and collectively strengthen best practice in this growing area.
