Designing with the Discarded
Event description
Marine Debris is a serious problem, with tonnes of plastic washing up onto our local shores. Where many see sadness and disgust, Regina Middleton catches glimmers of hope and intrigue. The Torquay based artist and designer has been collecting plastics along the high tide line for over a decade, reimagining how this material can be viewed, informing her jewellery and objects designs.
You and your family are invited to join Regina for a short 30 min walk along 13th Beach in search of weathered plastics. You will be asked to connect with your surroundings in a more intentional way, caring for country by collecting the debris found.
We will then regroup and examine what each person has found, where Regina will assist you to make your very own piece of small sculpture or jewellery, with the option to create a necklace or earrings.
