Dia de Muertos ¡Kids!
Description
Join us for a lively Day of the Dead celebration. There will be a traditional ofrenda, art, music and food. All families are welcome. Bring the kids in costume to collect sweets and learn about the Mexican tradition of Día de Muertos.
What to expect
This is a drop-in event, so come and go whenever suits your family.
1pm to 2:30pm: Low sensory time, with less music and fewer people.
From 3pm: A live Latin band, so it’ll get loud and likely more busy.
What to wear
Costumes and face paint are optional. Halloween costumes are welcome, or try a calavera look; search “Catrina face paint kids”. Please avoid anything scary or gory so you don't scare little ones.
Food
We’ll be selling food from 1:00pm to 4:30pm, or until it sells out, so come early and note that this is a cashless event. All proceeds support the HolaKids playgroup.
Getting in
The Town Hall lift is out of order, so sadly the event isn’t wheelchair accessible. Bringing a pram? Use the call point at the bottom of the stairs, and a volunteer will help you carry it up and back down.
Bring a photo for the ofrenda
Día de Muertos is about remembering loved ones who have passed. Bring a photo of a family member, friend, pet, or even a famous person to place on our ofrenda. Just remember to take it home with you.
Please supervise your children
Volunteers will be around, but they won’t be minding kids, so please keep an eye on yours at all times.
We’re an all-volunteer crew doing our best, so thanks in advance for your patience and let someone know if there's anything that needs attention.
FAQs
- What ages are allowed?
This event is for all ages. The activities will be geared for kids under 12 years of age but there will be something for all to enjoy.
- Will there be food?
Yes, we will be selling food to support this and other HolaKids Tas events.
- Do I need to stay the whole time?
This is a drop in event, so drop in at any time from 1pm - 5pm and stay as long or as little as you need.
- What should I wear?
There is no dress code for this event. If you'd like to paint your face like a catrin(a) go ahead, if you want to wear your halloween costume that fine too. Please don't wear scary/gory costumes because this is an all ages event and you could scare small children.
Costumes are encouraged but totally optional. Just dress comfortably.
- I have a pram that I'll need in the room with me
If you have a pram, our door volunteers can help carry this up for you as long as the child isn't in the pram at the time. There will be helpers to help you get it down as well.
