Digital Landscape Painting with Procreate
Course Time: Tuesdays 1-3pm
Course Dates: Tuesday May 6th, 13th, 20th and 27th
Course Structure
The course is divided into four 2-hour sessions, each focusing on specific aspects of landscape painting in Procreate. The course is open to anyone; from the complete beginner to the experienced, from the avid painter on canvas to the complete novice; you are all welcome. This course has been designed to cater for all comers, and will move at a pace that allows you to learn at your own pace.
Session 1: Introduction to Procreate & Basic Techniques
Duration: 2 hours
Topics Covered:
Overview of Procreate tools: brushes, layers, blending modes.
- Setting up your canvas and understanding resolution.
- Basic sketching techniques for landscapes.
- Exercise: Create a simple sketch of a seaside view using basic tools.
Session 2: Composition, Colour and Depth
Duration: 2 hours
Topics Covered:
- Principles of composition (foreground, middle ground, background).
- Choosing and blending colours for realistic landscapes.
- Adding shadows and highlights to create depth.
- Exercise: Paint an Australian bush scene focusing on light and shadows.
Session 3: Advanced Techniques & Textures
Duration: 2 hours
Topics Covered:
- Using advanced brushes for textures (eg, Charcoal, Texture & Organic Brushes for texture).
- Layering techniques for complex scenes.
- Adding details like reflections and mist.
- Exercise: Paint a water scene with reflections and greenery.
Session 4: Final Project & Refinement
Duration: 2 hours
Topics Covered:
- Combining all techniques into a polished landscape painting.
- Adjusting colours and composition for balance.
- Exporting artwork for prints or digital use.
- Final Project: Create a layered landscape featuring cliffs, ocean and flowers.
Equipment Needed
- iPad with Procreate installed
- Apple Pencil
- Reference images for inspiration for landscapes. Images for the weekly exercises will be provided by the tutor (Greg). However, it is a good idea if you acquire some of your own images for your practice. The tutor will show you how to import these into your Photos App and how to use them in Procreate as reference images.
Note
- If you do not have access to an iPad and Apple Pencil The Ballarat North Neighbourhood House will loan you one for the duration of the course.
- So that you can practice what you have learned during each class your tutor will provide you with a link to his YouTube site, where you can find videos on each topic - and more.
- Greg will also provide you with a handout (at the first session) with links to his favourite YouTube sites on the Basics of Procreate.
