Why is Dignity of Risk and Duty of Care important?

Does your workforce get concerned about consumers making choices that may impact their health and wellbeing?

Do you worry that you may be in breach of your legislative responsibilities if you allow consumer choices that appear dangerous or risky?

Dignity of Risk and Duty of Care can seem like opposing concepts that are operationally challenging to manage. The Aged Care Quality Standards require providers to practically support the concept of dignity of risk. There are complexities associated with consumers living with disabilities and chronic conditions particularly where decision-making capacity is unclear.

At LPA, providers often seek our advice about what to do when consumers make decisions that are considered high risk. For example, a consumer with a falls history continues unaccompanied visits to the local shops. Or a consumer living with dementia continues to cook using a gas stove. How does a provider manage such dilemmas? We want to demystify these challenges for you and provide you with clear direction to minimise your risks and support consumer choice.

To effectively manage the dignity of risk and duty of care, providers need to have policies and practices in place as part of routine practice. There are also a number of key questions to assist you in assessing your preparedness for avoiding issues arising and managing dilemmas.

Has your service actively promoted a culture of supporting the dignity of risk?
Does your service have policies and procedures that support the dignity of risk?
Does your workforce have a clear understanding of the principles that apply to the dignity of risk and duty of care?
Do consumers, families/carers and relevant health professionals have a shared understanding of your service’s policy and processes regarding risks, choices and duty of care?

This webinar will provide you with a comprehensive understanding of how the dignity of risk and duty of care apply in home care. It will enable you to manage high-risk consumer choices and preferences in a systematic way. The webinar will also clarify what systems, practices and process are essential to managing dignity of risk and duty of care. This webinar will explore case studies of common situations and how to methodically work through a process to manage these.
