ABOUT THE CONCERT
First prize winner of over 40 Australia and international competitions, including 2022 Steinway Youth Piano Competition Australia and prestigious International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition for Children and Youth in Szafarnia, Poland, 10-year-old Dillon Chan is one of Australia’s leading younger-generation pianists, and has impressed many renowned musicians around the world.
“Dillon, you are amazing!”
– Lang Lang, internationally acclaimed pianist and Steinway Artist
“This little boy (Dillon) plays with really great feelings. Feelings are innate.”
– Cao Xiaoxia, Director and Chief Conductor of Shanghai City Symphony Orchestra
“Dillon is very musical. I am sure he will continue playing and have an interesting future.”
– Prof. Katarzyna Popowa-Zydron, Head of Jury of the 17th and 18th International Chopin Piano Competition.
In June 2023, under the tutelage of Glenn Riddle, Dillon passed Australian Music Examination Board (AMEB) Piano Licentiate in Music (LMusA) with Distinction, with the general impression for the examiners being “A program of appropriate diversity and challenge was performed with a sense of artistic authority and stylistic insight, in which considerable technical command was consistently placed in the service of stylistically informed artistic goals.”
This recital marks Dillon’s third solo recital which celebrates him being one of the youngest candidates in Australia awarded piano LmusA with Distinction. Dillon is presenting his full LMusA program, including Keith Humble Eight Bagatelles, J.S. Bach Prelude and Fugue in C# major, Haydn Sonata in C major, Chopin Nocturne in Db major, and Poulenc Caprice Italien.
Dillon is joined by two equally talented young musicians, violinist Paige Wu and cellist Gabriel Liu (see below for Paige and Gabriel's profiles) in presenting the first movement of the well-known Mendelssohn Piano Trio No 1 in D minor. All three young musicians are scholarship holders in the Melbourne Conservatorium Young Artists Academy (MCYAA) Chamber Program. This performance is supported by MCYAA and prepared by the Academy’s dedicated teachers including Edith Salzmann, Odette Creanga-Kurth and Caroline Almonte.
Dillon is also delighted to present his orchestra debut item, the first movement of Chopin Piano Concerto No 2 in F minor. In 2022, at 9 years of age, Dillon was invited to perform this movement with the Preston Symphony Orchestra, as well as with the MCYAA Symphony Orchestra. Dillon's performance of this concerto movement on the YouTube Channel of Polish Music Competition Australia has attracted over 4300 viewers. Invited by Grammy-winning conductor Muhai Tang, two weeks after this recital on October 28th 2023, Dillon will perform this piece at the 22nd China Shanghai International Arts Festival at Shanghai Concert Hall Square which seats thousands of people.
