Doctors For Nutrition are proud to host a ‘Dine with a Doc’ dinner and panel discussion - Inspiring Sustainable Change

A whole food plant-based diet has innumerable benefits for both human and planetary health. It has the potential to prevent, manage and even reverse many of the chronic diseases facing New Zealanders, and the rest of the Western world, today. Eating more whole plant foods reduces our carbon footprint and can be something each one of us can do to mitigate climate change. With this in mind, why is it so challenging for people to adopt a whole food plant-based eating pattern?

Our panel discussion will focus on the ways medical professionals can inspire their patients to sustainably switch to a plant-based diet. Our GPs will share success stories on patients who have experienced dramatic changes through embracing a new way of eating. We will also discuss how we can arm people with knowledge on why they should eat a more ‘climate-smart’ diet and therefore motivate sustainable change.

Following the panel discussion we will host a Q&A session with the speakers.

A healthy oil-free, plant-based dinner, curated by the chefs at Khu Khu Eatery, will be provided. This will be followed by networking opportunities with representatives from our plant-based community in NZ including local dietitians, specialists, GPs and medical students.

On the menu:

Pad Thai - Classic saucy sweet noodles served with crunchy peanuts and protein-packed tempeh
Fresh rolls - Fragrant and herby rice paper rolls stuffed with garden greens, served with a peanut carrot sauce
Green papaya salad - Fresh, crispy, crunchy salad with crunch peanut and cherry tomatoes. Served with our fresh flavour sauce.
Tofu and veggie stir fry - loaded with seasonal vegetables and tofu in a tasty sauce.

Panelists

Dr Mark Craig
General Practitioner

Mark’s main passion in medicine is the prevention and reversal of our most common diseases in patients using the astonishing power of whole food plant-based nutrition and lifestyle changes. After attending Edinburgh Medical School, Mark trained in surgery then General Practice in the UK, having published several peer-reviewed medical papers in various specialties. Mark is also a founding member and Vice-Chair of Evidence-Based Eating New Zealand and regularly speaks at lifestyle and nutrition conferences and events.

Dr Mandy Bergstrom
General Practitioner

Mandy is a doctor based in Whangarei. She has a passion for preventative medicine, which involves addressing the risk factors that contribute significantly to our leading causes of death and disease (not just throwing pills at a patient once a disease has already occurred). Diet is the number one risk factor for early deaths worldwide, yet it is often not sufficiently addressed in our hospitals, practices or even medical schools. Mandy believes we owe it to our patients to provide them with accurate and up-to-date knowledge to help prevent and potentially reverse chronic diseases, which is why she is promoting a whole food plant-based diet.

Ben Eitelberg
Co-founder of ‘The Lentil Intervention’

Ben Eitelberg is the co-founder and co-host of The Lentil Intervention Podcast, an Australasian advocacy platform disseminating all aspects of planetary health. He is the founder of Kaitiaki Endurance Sports, a group that trains and competes with a purpose; and not-for-profit Athletes for Nature, a movement of outdoor enthusiasts who appreciate nature's importance and take action to protect it. Ben is a passionate environmentalist and an advocate for an ethical and healthy lifestyle. He also regularly demonstrates there are no boundaries to success as a plant-powered ultra trail runner!
