Event description

Come and join Port Environment Centre for a Discovery Walk along the coast!

Discovery Walks are designed to connect you with the nature and community and are offered by Port Environment Centre.

We invite you to join us for a walk between Semaphore and Taperoo, with a focus on the coastal dune environment.

Learn about this fragile ecosystem and the valued work of the Semaphore Largs Dunes Group volunteers to educate and restore these natural habitats and protect the plants and animals that call this place home.

This walk is approx. 5.5km over a 2 hour period and a moderate level of fitness is needed. If you would prefer to walk one way only (to Taperoo) you have the option to organise your own lift back to Semaphore via taxi/uber/family if you choose – please just let us know on the day.

Date: Sunday 7 May

Meet spot: The Semaphore Esplanade carpark to the north of the Palais Hotel and Wonga Park reserve (opposite Hall Street, or 101 Esplanade Semaphore)

Meeting time: please meet the group at 9.45am so we can all be ready to start promptly at 10am

Walking surfaces include the coastal footpath, with some gentle inclines and declines and the path is wheel friendly.

There are public toilets near the Largs Bay Jetty (half way to Taperoo) or a 3min walk south of our meeting point at Semaphore.

** Please note: Council is doing some footpath upgrades between Semaphore and Largs. If these will impact our walk, we may shift the starting point further south to Semaphore Park. We will notify you of this beforehand.**

What to wear/bring:

  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Sun protection (hat, suncream, sunglasses)
  • Raincoat (if wet weather is forecast)
  • Warm layers that can be added/removed for comfort
  • Filled water bottle
  • Snack/fruit
  • Backpack or bag to carry loose items
  • Personal items such as medications eg puffers
  • Camera (optional)

Please note: Participants under the age of 18 years must have a registered ticket and be accompanied by an adult.

Cancellation: We reserve the right to cancel if the weather forecast predicts unsafe conditions for our leaders and the public eg severe weather or thunderstorms – we will notify you with as much notice as possible should this happen.
