Join the Doctors in Secondary Schools Clinical Training Program's Breakfast Club.

Each fortnight throughout Term 3, we will be speaking with specialists to discuss common issues presenting in young people. These sessions are designed for clinicians, nurses and educators.

Could it be ADHD?: Triaging issues of focus and attention in teens with A/Prof Daryl Efron
  • Recognise late presentation patterns of ADHD in teens
  • Describe the classic symptoms of ADHD and how to assess this in practice using clinical assessment tools 
  • Discuss elements of assessment that can be initiated in primary care to support a more streamlined assessment approach for young people and carers 
  • Describe common differential diagnosis, masquerades and pitfalls in ADHD assessment and management planning 
  • Identify resources for families, carers and young people with a presumptive to support self-management of common symptoms

ADHD Outcomes in Primary Care with Dr Rick Jarman



  • Describe an overview of treatment options for teens with ADHD 
  • Discuss first line pharmacological therapies for ADHD and how this is initiated in specialist practice 
  • Describe common treatment challenges, side effects, concerns and barriers that young people and their families may face 
  • Discuss the potential role of GPs and nurses in supporting medication monitoring and/or co-prescribing with Paediatricians and Psychiatrists

The wicked problem of vaping in teens: How can GPs and nurses help? with Dr Moya Vandeleur



  • Describe the rise of e-cigarette use in teens in Australia and types of vaping products that have been available in Australia 
  • Discuss the introduction of e-cigarettes in the context of public health interventions for adult smoking cessation and the unintended consequences of e-cigarette uptake in teens 
  • Discuss the role of GPs and primary care nurses in e-cigarette screening and health education  
  • Describe the principles of early intervention management and support for smoking cessation in general and in relation to new legislation
Wednesday 30 August 7.30am-8.30amSexual and reproductive health in the era of Tiktok (Pt 1) - Health promotion and screening with Dr Suzanne Pearson and Larissa Hudson
  • Describe the changing needs of contemporary teens in relation to Sexual and reproductive health education 
  • Identify and list contemporary myths and misconceptions being promoted to teens through social media in 2023 
  • Discuss updates in sexual and reproductive health education (SHV education, Period education) 
  • Discuss screening for menstrual problems and contraception care 
  • Discuss STI screening and the changing guidelines 
Wednesday 13 September 7.30am-8.30amSexual and reproductive health in the era of Tiktok (Pt 2) - Clinical care with Dr Suzanne Pearson and Larissa Hudson
  • Discuss the needs of teens who came of age during lockdown and how we can catch-up on best practice reproductive care 
  • Describe updates in contraception care 
  • Identify common socio-cultural and structural barriers that young people face in accepting best practice recommendations in contraception and menstrual management  
  • Describe the use of hormonal management for heavy menstrual bleeding and pain 


These series events have been approved in the RACGP 2023-2025 triennium as a 5 hour activity (465602): 5 hours of Reviewing Performance.
