Navigating Family Relationships

A Divergent Discussion with Phoebe Rogers

Family relationships can be some of the most important relationships in our lives and sometimes some of the most complicated.

For neurodivergent people, differences in communication, emotional needs, boundaries and expectations can add another layer to family dynamics. You may care deeply about the people in your family and still find it difficult to feel understood by them.

Sometimes the challenge is communicating what you need. Sometimes it’s navigating expectations that don’t quite fit. And sometimes, it’s working out how to protect your own wellbeing while still maintaining relationships that matter to you.

In this Divergent Discussion, Phoebe Rogers joins us to explore how neurodivergence can shape the way we experience and navigate family relationships. We’ll look at how differences in communication, needs and expectations can affect family dynamics, why misunderstandings can happen even when people care deeply about each other, and how families can find ways to better understand, communicate with and support one another.

Together we’ll explore:

How neurodivergence can shape family relationships and communication
Why neurodivergent people may sometimes feel misunderstood within their own families
Navigating different expectations, needs and communication styles
Setting and communicating boundaries with family members
Masking and the pressure to meet family expectations
Managing conflict, misunderstandings and difficult conversations
Finding ways to stay connected while still respecting your own needs
What healthier and more supportive family relationships can look like
