The Role of Emotions in Learning and Developing Empathy
A Divergent Discussion with Mikuláš Štubňa
Emotions are part of how we experience the world. They can influence what captures our attention, what we remember, how we respond to challenges and how we connect with the people around us.
Emotions can also play an important role in how we understand other people. By recognising and making sense of our own emotional experiences, we can build a greater understanding of what others may be feeling and develop our capacity for empathy.
But emotions are complex. We don’t all experience, recognise or express them in the same way, and the connection between emotions, learning and empathy can look different from person to person.
In this Divergent Discussion, Mikuláš Štubňa joins us to explore how emotions influence the way we learn and how emotional understanding can contribute to the development of empathy. We’ll look at why emotional experiences matter in learning, how they can help or hinder our ability to engage with new information, and how learning to recognise different emotional perspectives can deepen our understanding of ourselves and others.
Together we’ll explore:
How positive and difficult emotions can shape the way we understand and empathise with others
The connection between emotional awareness and understanding other people
How recognising different emotional perspectives can help us develop empathy
Why people may experience, interpret and express emotions differently
How supportive environments can encourage emotional understanding and empathy
Practical ways to build emotional awareness, understanding and empathy in everyday life
