TAKING CARE OF THE ELDERLY: A MUSLIM PERSPECTIVE   

Professor Samina Yasmeen is Director of Centre for Muslim States and Societies and Head, Department of International Relations, Asian Studies and Politics in the School of Social Sciences, the University of Western Australia (UWA), Perth. She is a specialist in political, and strategic developments in South Asia (particularly Pakistan), the role of Islam in world politics, and citizenship among immigrant women. Among her many achievements is the large-scale study she undertook on the Settlement Needs of Muslims living in Perth Metropolitan Area in the 1990s. INDIAN EXPERIENCES OF AGEING IN AUSTRALIA: Ram Bansal, AfCAS Committee Member, has 35+ years’ experience as a business owner, having run businesses in India, New Zealand and Australia. He has been connected to and on the board of various community organisations for 30+ years. Currently, he is president of Narayan Seva Sansthan, a registered Australian charity, primarily working in India and Africa, transforming lives in many ways such as providing free education and meals, special guided education to the deaf and dumb, teaching life skills to the visually impaired and professional skill development of the differently-abled.

The presentations will be partiularly of interest to those who deal with diverse communities in providing services in aged care settings, community settings or business settings. The needs of elderly Muslims and Indians will be explored by drawing upon stories and observations in Australia and in their home countries.
