Diverse Perspectives - Soil Biology

Event description

Come and experience a fascinating insight into the world of Soil Biology!

The lecture series is targeted at permaculture practitioners and closely aligned practitioners from the fields of regenerative agriculture (including organics and biodynamics), native bush rehabilitation, community gardeners, and environmentalist activism.

As permaculturalists we are interested in understanding natural patterns and the elements within a living system. It helps us to improve our designs and create new techniques. People are constantly learning and unearthing new/hidden connections. Our perception of the world and how we make sense of it is in flux. This is a space of possibilities. We asked our speakers: Is the foundational knowledge of your field shifting? Are assumptions, that have directed the questions asked, being brought to light? What are the new questions being asked?

The event will be catered and includes time for questions and socialising afterwards. Please feel free to bring along a plate to share.

The speaker, Emerita Professor Lynette Abbot, has had a long career teaching and researching soil biology at the University of WA and is a world-leading academic and science communicator in soil science and soil biology. She has been involved for many years in investigating the activities of a wide range of soil organisms in the context of their contribution to important soil processes. She is interested in soil organisms and their roles in natural ecosystems as well as in agriculture/horticulture and disturbed environments such as mine sites. Professor Abbott runs hands-on activities demonstrating the benefits of soil biota for soil health and leads the Land Restoration Demonstration Site research project at UWA Farm Ridgefield in Pingelly.

Her research includes; biochar-soil interactions, carbon sequestration in soil, soil restoration – arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and soil health.

Lyn has recently compacted more than five decades of soil biological health research into a new app. Targeted at Australian farmers the SOILHEALTH app is a valuable resource for anyone interested in soil health, including teachers, students, and gardeners.

Lyn is an active volunteer in the organisation Threads of Change (Australia).
