Diverticular Disease- New concepts in it's pathophysiology & treatment

The incidence of diverticular disease (DD) of the colon has been increasing worldwide and is particularly common in Western nations.

In this presentation, Dr. Hawrelak will review the research around DD prevalence and its aetiology, as well as delving into the role of dysbiosis, chronic low-grade inflammation, and metabolic dysfunction in its pathophysiology.

He will also discuss the therapeutic potential of probiotics, prebiotics, microbiota manipulation, dietary supplements and herbal medicines in its treatment.

Dr. Jason Hawrelak

Dr Jason Hawrelak is a research scientist, educator, naturopath and Western herbalist with over 20 years’ clinical experience.

He did his PhD examining the capacity of probiotics, prebiotics and herbal medicines to modify the GIT microbiota and has written extensively in Australian and International textbooks and journals on these topics.

He is on the Medical Nutrition Council of the American Society for Nutrition and is a Fellow of both the American College of Nutrition and the Naturopaths and Herbalists Association of Australia.

Dr. Hawrelak is currently the Senior Lecturer in Complementary and Alternative Medicines at the University of Tasmania’s College of Health & Medicine (Hobart, Tasmania), where he coordinates the Evidence-based Complementary Medicine programs.
