Diwali 2024 (Gatton)
Event description
What is Diwali?
The Festival of Lights has many terms including Deepavali, Dipavali, Dewali, Deepawali. In Sanskrit, the word Deepavali translates to ‘a row of lights’, and this is a term more commonly used by South Indians to refer to the festival. In contrast, the North Indians use the modified ‘Diwali’. The legends that go with the festival are also different in different parts of India. However, Hindus, Jains, Newar Buddhists and Sikhs all celebrate the spiritual victory of good over evil, light over darkness, and knowledge over ignorance.
UQ Wellbeing in partnership with Association of Postgraduate Students (APS), UQ Gatton International Students Association (UQ
GISA), Hindu Cultural Society, UQU International Collective (UQ IC), UQ Indian Student Club (UQ ISC), UQ Naatak and UQ International Students Society (UQ ISS) invites you to
