Ever wanted to learn how to hang a shelf at home and improve your DIY skills?
DIY Basics: How to hang a shelf
Join us for a fun workshop that will introduce you to a range of power tools whilst gaining the practical skills to learn how to hang a shelf or a mirror. You will learn about different hand tools and power drills, how to identify different kinds of walls and wall fixings, and what to look out for when putting up shelves. This class is designed for anyone who wants to learn the basics in a relaxed and supportive environment. No previous DIY experience required.
By the end of the class, you’ll know how to:
Identify different types of walls and understand their characteristics.
Choose and use the correct wall fixings for different wall types and applications.
Understand different types of power drills and when to use them.
Identify common drill bits, including HSS, wood and masonry bits, and select the correct bit for different materials.
Measure, mark out and drill accurately to hang a shelf safely and securely.
Identify potential hazards, including hidden pipes and electrical cables, before drilling into walls.

What we expect from you:
We expect all members, volunteers and staff to follow and uphold our shared Code of Conduct.
Follow instructions to use machines safely (this includes always having the face-shield down or wearing safety goggles when using the machine, tying long hair back, not wearing loose clothing or jewellery, and turning the lathe off when not in use).
Have fun, be kind, and stay safe!
Useful to know: The space in our Leith workshop can get quite cold regardless of the season, please do make sure you wrap up warm to stay comfortable!

Within the workshop space we have a number of aids set up to help improvement the quality of your time spent with us. These include; a hearing loop, gripping aids and height adjustable bench seats.
