Ever wanted to borrow a tool from our library and not known where to start? Or wanted to gain more confidence using your own tools at home. This might be the class for you!

DIY Basics: How To Use Power Tools

Join us for a fun and practical, beginner-friendly introduction to power tools. This class is designed for anyone who wants to learn the basics in a relaxed and supportive environment. No previous DIY experience is needed.

During the session, you'll get hands-on experience with three essential woodworking tools:

•  Drill/Driver – learn how to drill pilot holes, choose the right bits and drive screws confidently

•  Jigsaw – learn how to make straight cuts, curves and simple cut-outs safely and accurately

• Mitre Saw – learn the basics of making accurate crosscuts and simple angled cuts

We'll cover essential tool safety, choosing the right accessories, setting up your workspace, measuring and marking, securing your workpiece and getting the best results from your tools. You'll have plenty of opportunity to practice under guidance and ask questions along the way.

What we expect from you:

• We expect all members, volunteers and staff to follow and uphold our shared Code of Conduct.

• Follow instructions to use machines safely (this includes always having the face-shield down or wearing safety goggles when using the machine, tying long hair back, not wearing loose clothing or jewellery, and turning the lathe off when not in use).

• Have fun, be kind, and stay safe!

Useful to know: The space in our Leith workshop can get quite cold regardless of the season, please do make sure you wrap up warm to stay comfortable!
