Documenting Artworks is a 2-part workshop developed and facilitated by local photographer and experienced art documentarian Janneth Gil.

For visual artists who want to learn or better their skills at documenting their artwork, be it in a studio, domestic space or gallery context, this free workshop is for you. Throughout the sessions, you’ll learn techniques and skills to confidently document your artwork to a high standard, ensuring you are able to record and maintain an accurate archive of your work and practice, as well representing your artwork well in exhibition and funding applications, and online.

This is a beginner’s course and no experience in photography is needed.

Participation is free, all are welcome.

PART 2: Documentation in a Gallery Context

Documentation in a Gallery Context is a workshop developed and facilitated experienced art documentarian Janneth Gil.

Part 2 of this workshop is for artists interested in learning how to accurately capture their own artwork and/or exhibitions in a formal context, such as a gallery. The workshop explores the importance of documentation as story-telling and due diligence in ensuring that artwork is catalogued and accessible to audiences.

Over the course of two hours, Janneth will discuss how good documentation can capture relationships between works and frame the art in its broader physical and theoretical contexts. By the end of the workshop, there will be no doubt about the usefulness of comprehensive documentation as part of best practice.

Workshop attendees are asked to wear black, grey, or white, and to bring their own camera or phone.

Janneth Gil is a Colombian-born New Zealander and multiple award-winning photographer and Engineer with a Master of Fine Arts (Distinction), majoring in photography, at the University of Canterbury. Gil specializes in using photography, collaborative practices, community engagement and a broad range of artistic processes as a tool for social change and wellbeing. She works in multiple galleries in Ōtautahi documenting exhibitions and is passionate about sharing this knowledge.
