Interpreter & Translator: Does the End Justify the Means?
When is it right to prioritise the audience over the source text in BSL interpreting and translation?

This workshop with Clive Mason explores the ethical and practical challenges of BSL interpreting and translation. You’ll examine the delicate balance between staying true to the source text and meeting the needs of your audience. Real-life examples will illustrate when it may be appropriate to prioritise audience understanding over literal accuracy.

Interpreting theories underpin our practice and guide quick decisions in the moment. Drawing on a variety of research-backed approaches gives interpreters a richer toolkit for handling challenging situations.

Key Questions Explored:

  • Is it ever justifiable to prioritise the target audience over the source text?

  • Should the source text be “dethroned” to better serve its purpose?

  • Can the end truly justify the means?

  • How do cultural differences affect ethical decision-making?

Who Should Attend:
Interpreters and translators seeking to deepen their understanding of ethical decision-making and translation strategies.
