Culturally Safe Practice with Young People and Families, with Zakia Patel (mHub)

Youth Coalition of the ACT - Burranda Room
O'Connor ACT, Australia

Add to calendar

Wed, 4 Nov, 1pm - 3:30pm AEDT

Description

The Youth Coalition is excited to continue our Community of Practice designed to strengthen connections between child, youth and family workers and specialist domestic and family violence services across the ACT, providing regular opportunities for professional development, networking and knowledge sharing. We are delighted to welcome Zakia Patel, Executive Director of the Multicultural Hub Canberra and Regional NSW (mHub) who will run our next workshop in November.

Format

This workshop will be run in a slightly different format to previous webinars as there is a strong preference for in person participation, and registrations will be capped at 25. If there is significant interest beyond this capacity, we will look to either re-run the session in early 2027 and/or work with Zakia to adapt some of the content for a webinar.

The workshop will be held on 4 November from 1-2.30pm, with the opportunity to connect and debrief over coffee/tea until 3.30pm.

Workshop

Zakia will use case studies, conversations and activities to support participants to build their skills and awareness to create culturally safe and responsible spaces for young people. She will cover:

  • what is culture? what is diversity?

  • how to unpack unconscious bias

  • how to engage with young people and their families about their culture

  • how to be culturally responsible to meet young peoples’ cultural needs

  • providing support for young people and their families with differing cultural attitudes to domestic and family violence

  • community structures

  • migration experiences including barriers to young people and families engaging with support and services.

Who should attend?

Building on the success of our Talk to Them training program, this ongoing initiative provides regular opportunities for professional development, networking, and knowledge sharing to better support young people affected by domestic and family violence and sexual violence. Whether you are a previous Talk to Them participant or a youth sector worker keen to strengthen your knowledge in this space, we'd love to have you join us.

Have questions you'd like to ask Zakia? You can pre-submit them to: https://form.menti.com/s/aln2gjvpju66
