Jesuit Social Services invites you to join us for the launch of Dropping off the Edge 2021, the latest edition of our research into place-based disadvantage in Australia. This will be the fifth edition of our research that has spanned more than 20 years.

Jesuit Social Services’ CEO Julie Edwards will provide an overview of the 2021 report’s findings and host a panel discussion featuring:

Professor Robert Tanton - Professor Tanton has a PhD in Economics from the University of Canberra, and has been at the University since June 2005. Prior to working at the University of Canberra, he was in the Commonwealth Public Service, working at the Department of Finance, the Commonwealth Grants Commission and the Australian Bureau of Statistics. He led the team at the ABS calculating the 2001 Socio-Economic Index for Areas (SEIFA) index.

Professor Ross Homel - Ross has been Foundation Professor of Criminology and Criminal Justice at Griffith University since 1992. Ross is a highly cited social scientist, having published approximately 250 books and has won many awards for his research on the prevention of crime, violence and injuries, and the promotion of positive development and wellbeing for children and young people in socially disadvantaged communities.

Chandelle Wilson - Chandelle is a member of Jesuit Social Services' Western Sydney team as Supervisor of the Willmot Community Kitchen. Chandelle was born, raised and lives in Western Sydney and has more than 20 years' experience in the community services sector – both as a volunteer and staff member.

The panel will discuss how Dropping off the Edge 2021 can be used to support advocacy and policy development to address place-based disadvantage.

The event will conclude with the official launch of Jesuit Social Services’ Centre for Just Places and a brief overview of how the findings from Dropping off the Edge 2021 will be carried forward by the Centre in future work.
