WALK CLUB is a collective exploration of the distinctive and ever-changing sounds of our surroundings — an invitation to deepen our connection to place. On each artist-curated soundwalk route, be guided through listening activities and creative reflection that turn our attention to the sonic environments around us.

This soundwalk is curated and led by Magandjin-based guitarist and composer Libby Myers. She will guide us on a walk in Dutton Park along the river, into South Brisbane Cemetery, and concluding at the Harmony Gardens. Expect to hear the sounds of leaves in the breeze, walkers and cyclists, birds and insects, water lapping on the river bank, stillness and reflection, and distant traffic. At the conclusion of the walk, we’ll turn our collective reflections into a musical soundscape using the sound sculpture in the gardens.

Route and Accessibility

Meet at 3:00pm at Dutton Park Place bus stop, near TJ Memorial Park Drive and the Dutton Park Place bus stop. There is a carpark on TJ Doyle Memorial Park Drive near the Dutton Park Recreation Hub. Dutton Park is serviced by numerous buses that stop at Dutton Park Place or on Gladstone Road, and is a 650m walk from Dutton Park train station.

We will be walking for about 3km over 60 minutes, with pauses along the way. The route includes steps and moderate sloping paths as well as grassy/off-path areas and uneven ground.

What To Bring

Wear comfortable close toed shoes, please bring plenty of water, sunscreen and a hat, and maybe a snack.

If you’re like, bring a field-recording device (like a ZOOM), a notebook or sketch pad, or any other creative listening/reflecting tools you would like!

What Is A Soundwalk?

A soundwalk is a walk with a focus on listening to the environment. Canadian composer, radio artist and sound ecologist Hildergard Westerkamp defines a soundwalk as “... any excursion whose main purpose is listening to the environment. It is exposing our ears to every sound around us no matter where we are.”

This term was first widely used in the 1970s in Vancouver by Westerkamp and other members of the World Soundscape Project, but we recognise that many similar practices exist, including First Nations practices of walking Country and listening to Country (eg. dadirri). Soundwalks offer a way for us to re-engage with our surroundings, and can foster a sense of community and belonging, as well as inspire and generate material for art-making.
