JULIO RONDO theremustbesomekindofstructure
04.05. - 25.05.24

Julio Rondo presents a new series of layered reverse-glass paintings in his exhibition theremustbesomekindofstructure. The artist creates each work by enclosing a painted wood surface in a glass case, treating its own reverse side with an overlay of acrylic in a technique he has developed since the 1980s. Rondo uses quick-drying acrylic paint to simultaneously capture his remembered past and preserve the present moment. Forgoing a mimetic depiction of specific environments or narratives, his work rather embodies the essence of incomprehensible and subjectively perceived emotions. The geometric colour fields place the tectonics of stroke and chroma on display, released from the rigidity of their form through expressive and visible brushstrokes. Although the painted marks appear to be improvised due to their vivacity, their form is meticulously executed by the artist. Each stroke is treated with such careful deliberation that, when viewed as a collective, the work transforms into a chorus of complex colour relationships that immerses the viewer in the captivating realm of Rondo’s art.

COBI COCKBURN thedistancebetween
04.05. - 25.05.24

Dominik Mersch Gallery is pleased to introduce one of Australia's foremost award-winning artists working in glass Cobi Cockburn with her exhibition thedistancebetween. Cobi's creative journey is one of perpetual evolution, marked by her relentless study of the materiality of glass through a contemporary lens. On her new body of work, she says: “This is a series that explores the transitory space between known subject matter and visceral associations. Through the expressive language of line and colour, these works delve into the subconscious, evoking innate emotions and calling on historical, physical, and emotional contexts to provide clarity. Purposefully void of direct references, I question perception, acknowledge universality, and contemplate personal narratives. Drawing inspiration from expansive landscapes, the series honour’s the threshold between the tangible and ethereal, a place where light reigns supreme.”
