La Ciudad Habla – The City Speaks

Every city, big or small, has a life force of its own. Some are so overwhelming that the people within them seem like mere elements of the city’s will. In this action-charged Double Featch, we invite you to experience the cityscape not just as a backdrop, but as a living, breathing character—one that shapes, swallows, and sometimes spits out the lives within it.

We’re leaving the developed world behind—and English with it. What remains are two raw, unfiltered visions of urban life, where the city dominates the screen and commands the fate of its characters. These films will challenge you to consider: are they stories shaped by the filmmakers, or windows into worlds so vivid they speak for themselves?

Our selections are City of God (2002), set in the infamous Cidade de Deus in Rio de Janeiro, and Viva Riva! (2010), set in Kinshasa, capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Both plunge us into crime-ridden streets where danger is constant and survival is anything but guaranteed. Escape feels futile—only those who adapt can hope to endure.

In these worlds, the line between individual and environment blurs. Can anyone outpace the city itself? Can we, the viewers, even catch our breath?

PSA's:

Doors are at 6pm with the first film starting at 7pm

There will be a short introduction by one of you hosts.

There will be an intermission between films and an optional screening of some bonus content before the next film begins.

Please be prompt with arrival as doors will shut to the event at 7pm sharp

Please remove your shoes once inside the evnt space

In the case you need to leave there will be a back exit

Snacks will be avaialable for purchase

Please be mindful of eating and drinking in the space

No smoking in doors
