Double Featch: What am I Seeing?
Description
When we watch a moving image, our sense of what’s real and what’s fake often owes more to how cinema records the world than to how we actually see it. A camera reacts to light through a lens—film grain, depth of field, the choices of framing—and over time that visual language trains us to recognize certain kinds of “truth” on screen. So how much of what we call reality, or how we want to see reality, is already shaped by the cinematic?
Movies don’t just mirror life—they feed it, and life feeds them back. The clothes we wear, the way we talk, even how we picture romance or danger are laced with images we’ve absorbed from film and television. Filmmakers in turn draw from those lived imitations, creating a loop where culture and cinema trade ideas and attitudes. Our everyday gestures, our big dreams, even our disappointments are all part of that ongoing exchange.
This Double Featch leans into that idea: life as movie. We’re screening Robert Altman’s The Player (1992) and Wim Wenders’ The State of Things (1982)—two films that turn the camera back on existence itself. Both are self-referential in different ways, asking not just how movies are made but how movies reframe the lives of those who make them and those who watch them.
The Player is a razor-sharp Hollywood satire about power, authorship, and the slippery ethics of storytelling. It tracks a producer whose actions force us to confront how easily narrative sympathy can be manufactured—and how complicit an audience can be in sustaining the very systems it critiques.
By contrast, The State of Things offers a sly, unexpectedly playful meditation on filmmaking itself. When a European crew runs out of film stock and funding, their shoot grinds to a halt—but their curiosity and creativity refuse to stop. Wenders transforms downtime into adventure, following the director as he crosses the Atlantic in search of a missing producer and encounters a series of surprising twists. It’s part road movie, part noir, and entirely a love letter to the stubborn magic of cinema.
Join us for a night of movies about movies—and for a chance to look at your own life the way cinema trains us to look. Bring friends, curiosity, and the patience to watch closely. RSVP on the event page or book via Humanitix—discussion and drinks after the screening.
