You are warmly invited to join us for a joint book launch for Jesus Sophia: Returning to Woman Wisdom in the Bible, Practice, and Prayer by Sally Douglas and Even the DevilQuotes Scripture: Reading the Bible on Its Own Terms by Robyn Whitaker.

Associate Professor Monica Melanchthon will launch Jesus Sophia: Returning to Woman Wisdom in the Bible, Practice, and Prayer by Sally Douglas.

Jesus Sophia explores the overlapping theological themes that Jesus and Sophia share within the bible. Questions about biblical interpretation, theology, and faithful practice are investigated in relation to themes including divine hospitality, friendship, anger, and care for the earth.

“With deftness, honesty, and tenderness, and with the clarity and depth of a scholar, Sally Douglas invites us to discover and experience for ourselves the ancient, neglected traditions of Jesus Sophia. In this engaging book, she guides the reader to welcome Woman Wisdom into the language of their soul and to find new ways of participating in the divine life of Holy Wisdom.”

—Vicky Balabanski, Principal, Uniting College for Leadership & Theology

“I was comforted, unsettled, challenged, and sustained by this beautifully written and well-researched book. I was drawn into prayer, reflected on how Jesus as Woman Wisdom guides how I live, and found myself reaching for my Bible to read it with new eyes. This book will nourish the curious and committed alike, inviting all to gather at the table of Jesus the meal-maker and find life.”

—Sharon Hollis, President, Uniting Church in Australia

Professor Peter Sherlock will launch Even the Devil Quotes Scripture: Reading the Bible on Its Own Terms by Robyn Whitaker.

Even the Devil Quotes Scripture looks to the Bible as a guide to interpreting the Bible, and her findings breathe new life into our understanding and use of Scripture. Ultimately, Whitaker proposes a hermeneutic of love—a litmus test for the validity of a scriptural interpretation measured in charity.

“Whitaker’s lucid and highly personal book urges the read to let the Bible be what it is rather than force it into preconceived categories and to keep in mind that the goal of interpretation is love. This engaging book should be read by any student embarking on the study of the Bible, especially those who come from a conservative background and are anxious about the effects of critical scholarship.”

—John J. Collins, Professor of Hebrew Bible, Yale University

“This unique book integrates Whitaker’s impressive academic expertise with everyday matters of faith and applies both to reading the Bible and to discerning how God continues to speak to God’s people through this living, dynamic sacred text. Whitaker challenges the ways the Bible is used to condemn and exclude and advocates replacing such use with a hermeneutic of love, inviting readers deeper into conversation with God and following the example of Jesus. This book is a gift and excellent resource for the academy, the church, and, in Whitaker’s words, ‘those hovering around her edges’.”
