Description

Professor Heidi Hornik is Professor Art History and Chair of the Department of Art and Art History at Baylor University in the United States and will be presenting a lecture on Art & Theology in Scarsellino (1550-1620).

Scarsellino, a Ferrarese Mannerist artist painted religious scenes depicting Peter and Mary Magdalen. Both have significant encounters with Jesus that involve the strength of their faith. Peter loses his faith when he loses focus on Christ while walking on water in Matthew 14 while Mary Magdalen is the first disciple to see Jesus after the resurrection but mistakes him for the gardener and Jesus tells her, “Don’t touch me!” (John 20:17).  Through a comparison with other scenes of these two themes, the form and content of the pictures will be discussed using an art historical methodology with a theological bent, attending to the commentaries and doctrinal sources that may have influenced Scarsellino at this time in the history of religious art.

It is a free event. Please RSVP by selecting the number of tickets you need.
