“VIP Dr Paul: opportunities and challenges of qualitative analysis using multiple and diverse data sources”

This session is part of the series: Qualitative Data Analysis at UTS. The aim of this series is to showcase and celebrate the diverse and innovative ways UTS researchers are working with qualitative data, unpack some underlying principles of qualitative data analysis, and explore some qualitative data theoretical frameworks.

In this workshop, we will be joined by Dr Jean Paul who is the PI of the “Village Project” based in Tyrol, Austria which looks to support children who have a parent with a mental illness. She is a social scientist and applied linguist in child health research. Dr Paul uses qualitative approaches to explore how people experience and are impacted upon by their interactions with the healthcare system. Dr Paul will discuss the use of multiple data sources to enrich research findings. She will examine complexities with analysing translated data (German to English). Her work importantly advocates for including the ‘voices’ of people who are often not included in research, in this current project, children. However, this brings methodological challenges, not only in data collection but also during analysis. She will discuss some current strategies to analyse qualitative data that could be considered ‘thin data’ along more narrative rather than thematic lines.

Better understand strategies to employ when using narrative data in qualitative data analysis
