This face-to-face professional learning event is for Drama teachers and is offered in partnership with the Adelaide Festival Centre’s centrED and Drama South Australia.

The masterclass will include a day-long program of activities includes practical workshops by professional directors who will focus on contemporary theatre-making and rehearsal processes. Teachers will participate in innovative methodologies of dramatic production and performance that they will be to take into their classrooms.

This masterclass is a full-day program and includes a number of different sessions. Participants will select two workshops that they wish to attend when they purchase their tickets. There is limited space in each workshop and you are encouraged to book soon.

How does a company of theatre-makers work collaboratively to create an original piece of text-based theatre?

Text-based creation presented by Chris Drummond 

Chris will lead you through his signature process to draw themes and abstract ideas from existing text and develop these into dramatic narrative. You will experience how a company negotiates the different stages of creating new work, from concept to devising and writing, to rehearsals and final production. Chris will provide you with techniques and approaches to take back to your classroom for working with actors and the creative production team to realise a clear vision.

How might you create meaningful, performer-centred work entirely from scratch?

Devised creation presented by Daisy Brown

Daisy will lead you through her unique devised theatre process to develop entirely original work in real-time. As theatre-makers you will create work collaboratively through play and provocation. You will generate and shape original material completely from scratch, and craft meaningful narratives that activate intimate relationships between performer and audience. The experience will enable you to take-away and adapt Daisy’s process for devising unique, performer-centred work with your student-artists.

How can you, as an artist, director or maker explore a theme or narrative through physicality?

Physical creation presented by Jascha Boyce

Jascha will lead you through her original approach of physically interrogating an idea through physical theatre-making processes to develop movement and images for expressing underlying concepts for an audience. From the starting point of a conventional theatre text you will draw on an idea or theme as a launch-pad for a unique physical creation process. You will acquire a repertoire of physical tasks that can be applied to develop and realise any dramatic text, idea or concept in a classroom context.

Chris Drummond

Artistic Director of Brink Productions, Chris's productions have been presented by most major theatre companies in Australia. Credits include Memorial, The Aspirations of Daise Morrow, When the Rain Stops Falling and Night Letters (STCSA). In 2010 Limelight magazine nominated Chris one of the top 50 players in the arts in Australia.

Jascha Boyce

Jascha Boyce is a founding member and company director of Gravity & Other Myths (GOM), the Adelaide based acrobatics and physical theatre company. Jascha has recently launched Pulsing Heart, a creative studio crafting immersive activations and participatory art installations.

After over 25 years of training, teaching, and performing, Jascha now focuses her creative passion and drive, pushing the boundaries of new circus and participatory art through simplicity, honesty, and innovation.

Daisy Brown

Daisy Brown is a highly experienced theatre-maker, director, and educator in the Adelaide arts scene. She has directed, devised, or produced over 30 new Australian works. She is also a practicing high school teacher and has taught at Flinders University’s Drama Centre and AC Arts specialising in acting, direction, and devising. Daisy is co-creator of independent theatre company The Misery Children. Their upcoming work, The World is Looking for You, premieres in 2021. Daisy creates intimate, engaging theatre with emotional truth to remind us all that we are human.
