6-Week Studio Course
Anyone can learn to draw. It's really about learning to see.
Dogs are wonderfully varied. From Chihuahuas to Great Danes they've evolved (with a little human intervention!) into an incredible range of shapes, sizes and personalities. Yet every one of them shares the same underlying structure.
Over six relaxed studio evenings, we'll build a flexible way of seeing that works across every breed. Rather than memorising dozens of different dogs, you'll learn the simple ideas they all have in common, then adapt those ideas to capture each dog's unique character.
Each week we'll build on the last, moving between gesture, structure and observation until drawing expressive dogs starts to feel surprisingly natural.
Along the way we'll explore:
Seeing the feeling of the pose before the details ("the dog before the fleas")
Finding rhythm through characteristic straights and curves
Breaking complex forms into simple, manageable shapes
Understanding the underlying structure shared by every breed
Drawing expressive heads, paws and features
Developing confidence + learn to observation
The Space
Classes are held in a beautiful private room at The Camelia, Alexandria. With warm lighting, shared tables and a small class size, it's an intimate space to learn, draw, and get to know fellow dog lovers.
To help everyone settle in, a selection of shared antipasti is included each week, so you can arrive, grab a bite, say hello and ease into an evening of drawing together. Drinks are available from the bar if you'd like one.
By the end of six weeks...
You'll have a practical drawing process you can use, along with a sketchbook full of dogs and the confidence to keep drawing.
My hope is that, once you're hooked, we'll keep meeting up in cafés and parks to sketch together.

Classes begin Monday 31 August 2026.
To accommodate Spring School Holidays, we'll take a two-week break from 28 September + 9 October, then finish the final two classes on 12 and 19 October.
FAQs
- Do I need any experience?
No. First timers are welcome!
- What do I need to bring?
Nothing fancy.
A sketchbook or stack of paper (computer paper works!)
A Pencil
Any of your other favourite sketching supplies.
- Do I need to bring a photo of my dog?
No. I will provide reference images to go with the lesson plan.
However, we love to see dog photos, and you are welcome to draw from your own!
- Will we be working from live dogs?
No. We will work from photos in these classes.
However, there will be an optional additional meet up to sketch dogs in a cafe at some point during the class.
- Does the cost include all 6 classes?
Yes. The price is for the entire course, 6 Mondays evenings, and a couple optional bonus social sketches in the neighborhood.
