Drawing from Apple Trees: A Charcoal Making and Sketching Workshop
Description
Join artist Annie Lord for an outdoor art workshop exploring the creative possibilities of the orchard. Gather round the bonfire and learn how to make your very own drawing charcoal from apple wood, before sketching the trees using your handmade art materials. Lunch will also be provided as part of the workshop.
This workshop is designed to benefit local communities and is supported by the Mental Health and Wellbeing Fund.
Charcoal has been used by artists for tens of thousands of years. It’s an adaptable, expressive material that can be used to make strong black lines, transparent layers and bold, gestural marks.
This workshop will be split into two parts. To begin with you’ll learn how to make charcoal from apple prunings. After lunch, Annie will lead a sketching workshop, teaching you how to use your hand-made art materials to make expressive drawings of the apple trees.
This workshop is suitable for artists of all levels, even if you are a complete beginner this can start you on a new creative journey. At the end of the day, you’ll come away with a parcel of handmade charcoal, charcoal-based ink and several sketches.
All materials will be provided but please feel free to bring along your own sketchbooks if you’d prefer to work in them.
The workshop will take place outdoors so please dress for the weather.

Annie Lord
Annie Lord is a Scottish writer and artist whose work focuses on environmental and participatory art. Trained in sculpture at The Slade School of Fine Art, Annie’s practice has expanded to include storytelling, writing and community-based projects. Her work explores how people connect with the natural world, looking at how plants, animals and minerals are transformed into objects of artistic, scientific and everyday use. In 2023, she graduated with Distinction from the MA in Creative Non-Fiction Writing at Manchester Metropolitan University and was shortlisted for the Nan Shepherd Prize for her book in progress, Morphoses: On Nature’s Processes and Processed Nature. Annie is represented by Caro Clarke at Portobello Literary.
