Drawing Masterclass Series: Jude Rae - Still Life
Event description
As part of our Collection 100 centenary celebrations during 2024, we’ve invited four artists represented in the MAG&M collection to each present a masterclass.
Join one or all four in this series of intensive workshops that will provide unique insights and access to the artists as they share their knowledge, skills and tips about approaches to the landscape, the figure and the still life.
Each artist will talk about their work, demonstrate key techniques and offer discussion and guided instruction on the essential techniques of drawing.
Leading our fourth and final drawing masterclass of this series is artist Jude Rae, with a session focused on Still Life.
“The genre of still life offers a cultural frame that supports both the traditions of Realism and Abstraction. Drawing a still life can be helpful as an intermediary in the development and maintenance of a sense of quiet attention. It provides a context in which to develop a twin focus: on the one hand, the simple perception of objects; and on the other how we might use the discipline of drawing to respond to them.” Jude Rae
The session will include discussion of formal considerations and composition, practical approaches to various drawing mediums and techniques, and strategies for approaches to observation and the further development of works.
Please bring all your own materials and refreshments.

Jude Rae is a Sydney based artist primarily known for her still life paintings, portraits and architectural interiors. The low key, non-narrative imagery she employs allows the attention to dwell on the formal and material aspects of representational painting, encouraging a more reflective and considered approach to the complexities of visual experience.
Jude Rae is a two times winner of the Portia Geach Memorial Award, three times Highly Commended finalist of the Archibald Prize and the recipient of the prestigious Bulgari Art Award presented in partnership with the Art Gallery of NSW.
