Duck Creek Explorer 2026

We are starting this year’s trail with a visit to the property of Isabella and David Sullivan, home to their delightful olive grove and David’s pottery studio. This is a wonderful way to get into the groove for this gorgeous and eclectic trail.

The walking starts with an uphill run on a paper road to the back of former Mahurangi River Winery, across the ridge and down to the Mahurangi River. We'll go at an easy pace to take in the glorious views across Kawau Bay, south down to Whangaparaoa, and north out to the Dome and Matakana. This is a great place to get your photos.

Riverside, we'll visit an historical site before following the river north through peaceful, private farmland. There is a fence to climb (or squeeze through) and some rough trails but it's beautiful beside the river so take your time and enjoy.

As we emerge from the farm, we stroll along Duck Creek Road and find a spot to stop and have our lunch. Then it’s onward to the Mahurangi Farm-Forestry Trail running between Hamilton Road and Sandspit Road. This trail follows the middle reaches of Duck Creek and takes in sections of native bush and neighbouring farmland (with very friendly cows!). Please note we need to proceed with caution at the trail end as have to cross Sandspit Road which can be busy. Follow your guide's instructions.

The walk then continues on a brand new section of trail that is not yet open to the public. It follows Duck Creek river further upstream across the beautiful winding path that has been installed on Solway Farm. With new planting, native birds and more lovely surrounding farmland, we’re lucky to be able to beat the rest of the public to this section of walkway.

We finish at Sharp Rd and the bus will collect us there.

The walk is approximately 8km and reasonably well-formed, but we do go over some rough paddocks. You will need good footwear. There is some walking on public roads that requires caution and attention to your guide, and a difficult fence to climb. This walk sells out very quickly each year and will be a sure winner again this year.
