Dumb Folks at St Vincent's Chapel
Event description
After selling out Dunce Night, Huntigowk Night and May Fest Day Fest, DIY Promoters Dumb Folks return for their fourth event, this time at St Vincent's Chapel. Dumb Folks is a project that celebrates folk music and the music of folks. This gig showcases two groups from Edinburgh, The Gordon McGruer Trio and The Northen Light Singers, supporting Awen Ensemble, folk from further afield.
Awen, meaning ‘poetic inspiration’ in Welsh, outlines the intention of the band’s music to explore folkloric heritage, landscape and the human mind, inspiring audiences to reflect on and connect with these subjects. Playing both vocal led and instrumental work, the outfit take inspiration from modal tradition, spiritual jazz, and folk music found across the globe, creating compositions that are melodically focused and groove driven. Featuring spoken word, shimmering instrumentation and a Celtic mystique, Awen Ensemble bring a unique offering to the jazz table.
Gordon McGruer and his trio perform alternative and experimental folk songs about drunk magicians, seagulls and adaptations of his dad's poetry. The intimate trio summon a rich sound to bring Gordon's compelling songwriting to life.
Northern Light is an Edinburgh based 8-piece choir singing a range of music from baroque motets to Scottish folk. They’ve performed in religious and secular settings such as the Church of the Sacred Heart, St. Giles Cathedral, and Leith Arches and the Argyle Cellar Bar for Dumb Folks Nights.
