ABOUT:

E.M.POWER is an evidence-based program aimed to provide youth girls (14-16yrs) with confidence and support when it comes to participating in strength-based exercise. Participants will train in world class facilities at the La Trobe University Sports Park and Football Victoria's Home of the Matilda's, hear from female elite athlete guest speakers, and undertake workshops and education sessions with emerging and leading researchers in the area of female physiology, nutrition, and health. 

The E.M.POWER program does not require participants to be engaged in any particular sport or competitive level, nor are participants required to have any prior experience with strength-based training or exercise.

DETAILS:

  • 5-day program (Monday 8 April to Friday 12 April)
  • 8.45am - 3pm 
  • Who can register: girls aged 14-16 years, who are currently physically active. 
  • Lunches are provided. 

ACTIVITIES:

  • Key upper and lower body movements  
  • Plyometrics
  • The basics of creating and evaluating your own program
  • Cooking class (including female-specific macro and micro nutrient needs)
  • Recovery workshop

Please Note: The above activities will occur across five days. Each day of the program is broken up into various theory and active components, it will not entail exercising for six hours each day. All activities will be conducted in a culturally safe and inclusive environment

    WHAT TO WEAR/BRING:

    • Comfortable clothing for exercise 
    • Items for outdoor activities (hat, sunscreen, jumper etc. be prepared for all weather conditions)
    • Footwear suitable for exercise (e.g. closed toe runners)
    • Healthy snacks, water-bottle 
    • Gym towel
    • Change of clothes (optional)

    • Single participant for five days (8:45am-3pm): $250

    RESEARCH PARTICIPATION:

    Participation in this program will also involve participation in research related to encouraging more girls to be involved in strength training (ethics approval number HEC24013), and forms part of a Masters students' research study.     Involvement in the program and associated research will require the consent from both a parent/guardian as well as the participants. Upon registering, we request that you complete and sign these consent forms and return it to the Project Lead, Dr Anthea Clarke, a.clarke@latrobe.edu.au.

    Wherever possible, excluding illness and emergency, it is preferable that participants attend all five days of the program to help meet quality standards of the research project.

    BIOGRAPHIES:

    Dr Anthea Clarke is a Senior Lecturer at La Trobe University, specialising in applied sport science and exercise physiology. Her research focusses on the female athlete and how we can improve the sporting environment for female athletes to thrive. She also recently curated the highly successful online short course for coaches and practitioners titled ‘Supporting the Female Athlete’.

    Mary-Claire Geneau is a strength and conditioning coach with over 10 years’ experience working across a range of sports including athletics, rowing, mountain biking, soccer, and field hockey. Her research areas of interest are in strength testing in athletes within high performance sport and in general strength training practices for female athletes.

    MEDICAL CONDITIONS & BEHAVIOURAL SUPPORT:

    • Allergies and/or Anaphylaxis: If the participant has any allergies or is anaphylactic you must supply an Action Plan with a current, coloured photo.
    • Asthma: If the participant has asthma you must supply an Asthma Action Plan and provide your child’s inhaler. You must also complete a Medication Administration form to permit staff to administer the inhaler if required.
    • Medication: If the participant has any other conditions which may require medication to be administered throughout the day (e.g. Panadol, Ritalin, anti-histamine), you must submit a Medication Administration Form.
    • Behavioural: If the participant has any behavioural support needs please complete a Behaviour Management Plan.

    CANCELLATION & REFUND POLICY:

      • To protect our staff and other participants, participants should not attend the program if they are sick or have cold and flu like symptoms. 
      • Please note a refund will not be provided for change of mind requests.
      • If La Trobe Sport is forced to cancel this event due to extenuating circumstances you will receive a full refund.
      • If a refund is provided for extenuating circumstances it will be less the Humanitix booking fee. 
      • Please contact a.clarke@latrobe.edu.au if the participant is unable to attend the program for any reason.
