Description

Are you feeling the pinch from rising fuel prices and energy insecurity? Concerned about the growing refugee and displacement crises caused by war and climate change? Want to understand how you can turn concern into meaningful action?

Margaret River Regional Environment Centre (MRREC) and Action and Resilience Collective (ARC) Wooditchup present a screening of Abby Martin’s Earth’s Greatest Enemy, a powerful documentary exposé of the world’s largest institutional polluter and the deep links between environmental destruction and social injustice. Hear from guest speakers, meet local organisations, and leave inspired with practical ways to take action and join the fight for climate and social justice.

Exempt from international climate agreements and rarely scrutinised in mainstream reporting, the Pentagon is the world’s single largest institutional polluter - spewing carbon, contaminating water, and scarring landscapes across the globe. Combining investigative journalism, striking visuals, and stories from impacted communities, this film challenges audiences to rethink the hidden costs of a global military empire and its planetary consequences.

These systems are not distant. They shape everyday life, from war and displacement to rising fuel prices, energy insecurity, and the growing cost of living pressures felt in our communities. The film lays bare a truth that’s often ignored: you cannot protect the environment without confronting the systems that are destroying it. Imperialism, militarism and capitalism are not separate from the ecological crisis - they are at its very core.

The evening will begin with guest speakers and a live Q&A, setting the context for the film and grounding the discussion in the political, economic, and social forces shaping the climate crisis. We will also have a vibrant information table showcasing various organisations who are working on peacebuilding and anti-war efforts. If you are feeling overwhelmed by what’s happening in the world at the moment, action is the best antidote. Connect with a group who are doing the work and get involved!

We’re excited to have several noteworthy speakers joining us for the event, including Sam Wainwright from Stop AUKUS WA, Dr. Peter Underwood from the Medical Association for Prevention of War, and, zooming in from deep within the belly of Empire, Jessica Burbank, US investigative journalist and filmmaker who has covered the global environmental and social impacts of militarism.

Together, we will explore:
• How global systems drive emissions, inequality, and displacement
• Why focusing only on individual behaviour change misses the real drivers of the crisis
• What meaningful, practical systems change looks like and how we can contribute

Tea, coffee and nibbles will be provided, however contributions are gratefully welcomed!

Free entry is available for mob and for those experiencing financial hardship. Please get in touch to reserve your seat.

We look forward to sharing this space with you for an evening of learning and community connection.
