Rep Oye Presents: Expungement Clinic
Event description
DC's US Representative Oye Owolewa joins forces with Christian Legal Aid of Washington, DC (CLADC), MORCA, DOES, DPR and Marshall Heights Community Development Organization (MHCDO) to host our final Expungement Clinic of the year (located at MHCDO at 3939 Benning Rd NE). Starting at 10 am on November 15th, returning citizens will learn about the record sealing process and then be paired with CLADC to start their record sealing process. We’ll also discuss how recent legislation affects DC’s record sealing process. Lastly, community leaders will provide professional building resources like resume building and interview tips. The goal is to reduce barriers and provide employment opportunities for our audience. The Expungement Clinic is from 10 am to 1 pm and all services come at no cost.
This Expungement Clinic comes at the heels of US Attorney Jeanne Pirro’s recent comments decrying DC’s record sealing legislation. In August, the former judge admitted that she didn’t care about root causes of crime. Soon after, Pirro and the Republican controlled Congress began targeting DC’s public safety laws. Specifically, the House passed legislation to try teenagers as adults for certain crimes and alter sentencing guidelines. US Attorney Pirro also complained about DC’s record sealing laws. For the past 2 years, Rep Oye’s expungement clinics have supported the justice impacted community and helped inspire changes in legislation. Due to this, Rep Oye will continue to do this work to maximize his impact. These factors, among others, make it necessary for Rep Oye's office to host 2025’s final Expungement Clinic. The Expungement Clinic is part of Representative Owolewa's commitment to improving public safety through resources and programs.
