Description

Wine Tasmania is pleased to announce two workshops (north and south) as part of the new EcoVineyards: Living Vineyards Tasmania program, supported by the Tasmanian Government and delivered by Retallack Viticulture Pty Ltd.

Join agroecologist and viticulturist Dr Mary Retallack from Retallack Viticulture and Ecology for a full day of practical information, discussion and vineyard-based activities exploring ecological approaches to winegrowing. The event will introduce EcoVineyards: Living Vineyards Tasmania, provide an opportunity for winegrowers to help shape the program’s regional resources, and showcase the projects being developed by our new Tasmanian EcoGrowers.

What you’ll learn:

  • EcoVineyards: Living Vineyards Tasmania – discover the program, meet the new EcoGrowers and learn about their demonstration-site projects.

  • Vineyard resilience – explore practical approaches to managing drier growing seasons and changing vineyard conditions.

  • Native insectary plants and ground covers – learn how to select and incorporate native plants into vineyards, including new plant-community lists being developed for Tasmania.

  • Functional biodiversity and biological control – discover predatory arthropods found in and around vineyards, how to attract and monitor them, and ecological approaches to managing insect pests such as light brown apple moth (LBAM), vine moth, scale, mealybug, millipedes and mites.

  • Grapevine nutrition and plant health – explore the plant health pyramid and the importance of grapevine nutrient integrity in supporting vine resilience and managing pests and diseases without defaulting to chemical intervention.

  • Practical monitoring and new technology – participate in vineyard demonstrations using a refractometer to assess plant brix, new agtech - Nutriscope™ by Senseen, a field sensor for assessing plant-health indicators, alongside non-destructive arthropod sampling, identification and monitoring techniques.

Practical vineyard activities:

We’ll head into the vineyard to explore monitoring techniques, demonstrate how emerging technologies and practical ecological observations can help inform vineyard management decisions and discuss your local EcoGrowers demonstration site project.

Find out more about new regional toolkits available for winegrowers to borrow and take home a free vineyard heroes mini poster.

Who should attend?

Tasmanian winegrowers, vineyard managers, and others interested in improving soil health, ground cover management, functional biodiversity, and vineyard resilience through practical, locally relevant approaches.

Come along, share your experiences, connect with other growers, and help shape the next stage of EcoVineyards in Tasmania.

Ticket prices are heavily discounted with support from the Tasmanian Government.
