Course Overview
Editing the work of writers is a careful act of collaboration. In this series of monthly workshops, learn how to communicate effectively with writers at each stage of the editorial process to balance the needs of the publisher/publication and the writer and ensure a positive and encouraging experience for everyone involved.
Each week, participants can bring along a piece by another writer to workshop their feedback as we work our way through the various stages of the editorial process.
This is a hands-on inclusive experience, providing all participants with the opportunity to discuss the ins and outs of each weekly topic together, while guided by a professional editor.

Proofreading
Your client's work has gone to design and now it's time for the final proofread. But contrary to popular opinion, proofreading isn't just about looking for those last few typos. Practice identifying design elements and marking up typeset documents to give your client's work the final polished look. If you have a typeset document for a client, bring it along to work on, otherwise a practice copy will be available to use.
Facilitator Bio
Jess Gately
Jess Gately is a freelance publishing professional who has worked in a range of publishing roles including editing, marketing and publishing administration. She has worked with publishers including Night Parrot Press, Fremantle Press and New Dawn Publishing, and was formerly the President of Editors WA (a branch of the Institute of Professional Editors). She has also taught editing and publishing at Curtin University. Jess is passionate about ensuring that writers have a positive experience of the editing and publishing process while also building their writing and editing skills for future projects.
