Course Overview
Editing the work of writers is a careful act of collaboration. In this series of monthly workshops, you will learn how to communicate effectively with writers at each stage of the editorial process to ensure a positive and encouraging experience for everyone involved.
Each week, participants can bring along a piece by another writer to workshop their feedback as we work our way through the various stages of the editorial process.
This is a hands-on inclusive experience, providing all participants with the opportunity to discuss the ins and outs of each weekly topic together, while guided by a professional editor.
Class Four Content
Structural editing is a tailored, collaborative process designed to strengthen a manuscript’s organisational architecture, content, and pacing. Facilitated by emerging writer and freelance editor Caitlin Kotula, this inclusive workshop introduces you to the first stage of the editing process and provides you with practical tips for undertaking a big-picture review of fiction and narrative non-fiction drafts.
You’ll learn to identify and analyse core story elements, and practice writing constructive, professional feedback for other writers in a hands-on workshopping activity. Writing samples will be provided on the day, but participants are welcome to bring their own short piece by another writer.
Facilitator Bio
Caitlin Kotula
Caitlin Kotula is a writer, editor, and creative writing master’s student from Perth/Boorloo. She self-published her poetry collection Worm Food and Bone Sand in 2022, and edited kim rashidi’s kaleidoscopic verse novel GIRL MESS: A katabasis in verse in 2024. She is a former Centre For Stories All Write Hot Desk Fellow, Westerly Magazine intern, and resident artist at Arteles Creative Centre in Finland, and she currently volunteers on the committee for WA Poets Inc. as Social Media Officer. In her spare hours, Caitlin writes for Ruminations on Substack, a digital commonplace and mailed correspondence devoted to the intentional, tactile, and shared. Caitlin is fascinated by the poetics of place and space and is particularly fond of rabbit holes.
