Event description

Effective Conferences with Young Writers

Facilitated by Amanda Bartram

This is a follow-up workshop for those who have already participated in our Introduction to Bookmaking or Introduction to Writer’s Notebook Mini Courses.

In the Writing Workshop, conferences are where the truly effective, ‘just right, just in time’ teaching happens. Conferences build and support the relationship between educator and young writer so that it is safe to take risks, accept the teaching ‘nudge’ and grow as an author and illustrator.

However, conferences can be challenging! Managing a range of young writers, choosing the right time and the right nudge and recording for assessment purposes are just some of the challenges we encounter daily during the Writing Workshop.

Developing an understanding of the conferencing process, building a ‘stack’ upon which to rely and establishing a repertoire of ‘nudges’ will ensure that your conferences are effective and supportive for all your young writers.

Join us, and challenge yourself to conference with confidence.

In this workshop, Amanda will:

  •    Discuss the role and structure of writing conferences
  •    Demonstrate the importance of the ‘stack’ and recording proformas
  •    Support you to recognise and select possible ‘nudges’
  •    Model the ‘nudge’ or teaching point
  •    Help you to connect your conference record keeping with assessment tools

Light Afternoon Tea is provided
