EKSIL (‘The Exiles’)
Film Screening and Discussion with the Director/ Producer
Winner of the Best Documentary Feature Film (2023 Indonesian Film Festival) and Best Film (Indonesian Screen Awards section, 17th Jogja-NETPAC Asian Film Festival) awards
During the 1965 mass killings and political transition to New Order rule and the suppression of the Indonesian Communist Party, the new government banned hundreds of Indonesian scholars in the Soviet Union, Eastern Europe and China from returning to their homeland, forcing them into exile across European countries without status. Shifting between the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Sweden, Germany, and Indonesia, the documentary Eksil (‘The Exiles’) follows 10 Indonesians whose lives were uprooted decades ago, as they recall the fate-changing events and strive to find the closest way to feel at home. It's a story of life built over trauma, the right to reclaim national identity, and a quest to define home through a collective of heartbreaking memories preserved by a group of cast-out intellectuals.
Introduced by director and producer, Lola Amaria, the screening will be followed by a panel discussion with Lola Amaria, Dr Vannessa Hearman, a leading expert on the 1965-66 mass violence and Indonesian exiles, and Dr Antonio Traverso, filmmaker and screen studies scholar.
