Description

ELDER ART – A Celebration of Creativity and Wisdom

As part of DESIGN Canberra 2026, The Queanbeyan Hive is delighted to present Elder Art, a special exhibition celebrating the extraordinary creativity, stories and lived experiences of our older artists and cultural Elders.

Bringing together painting, poetry, sculpture, textiles, architecture and recycled creations, Elder Artexplores the richness of a lifetime spent making, imagining and sharing knowledge.

Meet some of our remarkable contributors:

Keith Harrison – Acclaimed poet, academic and painter, sharing reflections on a lifetime of creativity.
Jenny Gibson – Now in her 90s, Jenny's beautiful paintings capture her intimate connection with the Australian bush.
Trevor Gibson – Artist and retired architect, whose paintings, drawings and life studies demonstrate the joy of continuing to create throughout retirement.
Dane Zunic – A wonderfully inventive maker from Queanbeyan's Macedonian community, transforming recycled materials into whimsical wind chimes.
Nancy Tingey OAM – Textile artist whose creative journey includes pioneering work connecting art and people living with Parkinson's.
Dr Aunty Matilda House-Williams OAM – Respected Ngambri-Ngunnawal Elder, sharing cultural knowledge, stories and perspectives.
Connee-Colleen Cameron OAM – Remembered through her extraordinary life-sized sculptures and enduring contribution to Queanbeyan's arts and cultural heritage.

Responding to this year's festival theme of Dissent, the exhibition challenges assumptions about ageing and reminds us that creativity, curiosity and imagination have no expiry date!

Join us for the official opening on Friday 13 November, alongside the Hive Buzz Bar's live music, followed by a weekend of artist talks, storytelling and conversations on 14–15 November. The exhibition continues until Sunday 22 November.
