ELEVATE: Understanding and Responding to Sexual Harm

Event description

This 4-hour professional development workshop is for anyone looking to increase their knowledge and skills when supporting people who have experienced sexual harm. It ensures a cohesive understanding of the issue before exploring strategies to support victim survivors. Participants will acquire the knowledge and skills to promote culture change and address drivers of sexual harm, thereby reducing the occurrence and impacts sexual assault to create a safer community.  We took our popular Sexual Trauma First Aid program through an instructional design process and the result is ELEVATE which utilises the most effective pedagogy and encompasses recently released research in relation to sexual harm in Australia.

Topics include:

  • SASS overview and referral pathways
  • Understanding the prevalence of sexual harm and the definition of consent
  • Responding to disclosures of sexual harm in a trauma informed way. 
  • How values, bias, judgements and stereotypes impact the experience of the survivor 
  • We promote safe avenues for reflection and  self-awareness

Learning outcomes:

  • Improved understanding of the impact of sexual harm
  • Knowledge of sociocultural sexual harm risk factors and how to mitigate them
  • Knowledge of supports available, referral pathways and reporting processes
  • Ability to apply trauma informed practice principles when supporting a current or historical disclosure of sexual harm.
  • Improved capacity and confidence to respond to disclosures of sexual harm, in a way which encourages survivors to continue help-seeking behaviour
  • Skills on how to advocate for survivor/victims and support those who have experienced sexual harm
